Ladder Safety

Your Safety Comes First

At Gorilla Ladders, your safety is our priority. Every ladder is designed and tested to meet applicable Australian and New Zealand Standards, but safe performance depends on the ladder being used correctly, inspected before each use, and maintained in good condition.

Before using any ladder, take a few moments to ensure it is suitable for the task and in safe working condition.

Before You Use Your Ladder

Always inspect your ladder before each use.

Check for:

  • Damaged, bent or cracked rails.

  • Damaged or cracked welds.

  • Loose or missing rivets, bolts or fasteners.

  • Damaged or missing feet.

  • Worn or damaged locking mechanisms.

  • Cracked, broken or missing hinges or braces.

  • Corrosion or excessive wear.

  • Any signs the ladder has been modified or repaired.

Never use a ladder that is damaged or missing structural components.

If in doubt, do not use the ladder until it has been repaired or replaced.

Safe Ladder Setup

Always:

✔ Place the ladder on a firm, level surface.

✔ Ensure all locking mechanisms are fully engaged before climbing.

✔ Open step ladders fully and lock the spreaders.

✔ Secure extension ladders where practical.

✔ Keep the area around the ladder clear of hazards.

✔ Maintain three points of contact while climbing.

While Using Your Ladder

Always:

  • Face the ladder when climbing.

  • Have one person on the ladder at any time.

  • Keep your body centred between the side rails.

  • Climb one step at a time.

  • Wear appropriate footwear with good grip.

  • Carry tools using a tool belt or hoist them separately.

  • Work only within comfortable reach.

Never:

  • Stand on the top cap or top step unless specifically designed.

  • Overreach outside the side rails.

  • Move the ladder while someone is on it.

  • Exceed the ladder's maximum load rating.

  • Allow more than one person on the ladder unless specifically designed for multiple users.

Multi-Purpose Ladder Safety

When using a multi-purpose ladder:

  • Ensure every locking clip is fully engaged before climbing.

  • Visually confirm all locking mechanisms are securely locked.

  • Never force locking mechanisms.

  • Make sure the ladder is configured correctly for the intended use.

  • Follow the instructions for changing configurations.

Working Outdoors

Extra care should be taken when using ladders outdoors.

Avoid using ladders:

  • During strong winds.

  • On uneven or unstable ground.

  • On slippery surfaces.

  • Near power lines.

  • During storms or wet weather.

If working on uneven ground, use an approved levelling device where suitable rather than makeshift packing or blocks

Ladder Maintenance

Looking after your ladder helps ensure safe operation.

We recommend:

  • Cleaning the ladder after use.

  • Removing dirt, paint and concrete from moving parts.

  • Lubricating hinges and locking mechanisms where recommended.

  • Storing the ladder in a dry, sheltered location.

  • Protecting the ladder from prolonged exposure to weather and sunlight.

Regular maintenance will help extend the life of your ladder.

When Should You Replace Your Ladder?

Replace your ladder if:

  • Structural components are damaged.

  • A locking mechanism no longer operates correctly.

  • The ladder has suffered significant impact damage.

  • Structural braces are missing.

  • The ladder has been modified.

  • Repairs cannot restore the ladder to a safe condition.

A damaged ladder should never be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I inspect my ladder?

Inspect your ladder before every use.

Can I repair my own ladder?

Only replacement parts approved for your ladder model should be used. Structural repairs should not be undertaken unless specifically authorised by the manufacturer.

Can I use a ladder that has been stored outside?

Ladders stored outdoors should be thoroughly inspected before use. Prolonged exposure to weather may affect components such as locking mechanisms, feet, labels and other fittings.

How much weight can my ladder hold?

Never exceed the maximum load rating shown on the ladder's safety label.

Ladder Safety Checklist

Before climbing, ask yourself:

☐ Is the ladder free from damage?

☐ Are all locking mechanisms fully engaged?

☐ Is the ladder on firm, level ground?

☐ Am I wearing suitable footwear?

☐ Is the ladder the right type and size for the job?

☐ Am I within the ladder's load rating?

☐ Will I be able to maintain three points of contact?

If the answer to any of these questions is No, do not use the ladder until the issue has been resolved.
